Mere naam is really Suzy, lekin mere blogwallah naam Sita-ji hai. Or is that blogwali, because I’m a larki? Here’s my avatar:
Here’s a bit of how it all started: “Mera naam is really Suzy, but call me Sita-ji because I’m a Bollyholic.” I must add a key for the following items which I LOVE to see in these movies: drinking Johnnie Walker, and people getting slapped, or as they say in Bollywood movies, getting a “tight slap to the face!” It’s not that I ever want to see anyone hurt by a slap, but I admit the shock it causes adds an enjoyable level of drama to the Bollywood films. I’ve never seen such slapping in movies until I found Bollywood. I also read books. In order to keep track of all those slaps and Johnnie Walker drinking, I indicate these events as follows:
t s = tight slap to the face ; j w= drinking Johnnie Walker
Here are some very rare screen images containing both a Johnnie Walker and slap refernces:
This is just a start and I’ll continue to update and better organize this page.

Hi,
I found your site very interesting.. I have started a bollywood portal http://www.bollydb.in .. do check it out.. would you be interested in exchanging links.. , I will add your site to my resources page.
looking forward to hear back from you
Vipul Kapadia

WOW, Sitaji (i.e., Suzy: and all this time I have this great fantasy that you’re actually Rani & Hema & Zeenat & Parveen all rolled into one babealicious Hindustani bari bari-aurat! Ah, the power of the mind!), I LOVE your site, and have just checked out your movie list: it’s going to take me awhile to get caught up with you, but I’m on my way, thanks to http://www.iTalkies.com! Tonight I just watched “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” and despite – or maybe because of – its very over-the-topness – I was completely engrossed! I think that Raj Kapoor was a genius and I so greatly appreciate his social commentaries…
Quick question: a couple of years ago I’d read somewhere that Amitji (countdown to the LA show of “Unforgettable”: I am SOOOOO exited!) was going to be doing a Hindi voiceover for “March of the Penguins”, but I haven’t seen it anywhere. Any clue? I loved what Morgan Freeman did, but can you imagine hearing that unmistakable baritone describing, “hindi mein”, the intimacies of those dear penguins?!
Thank you so much, Sitaji, for your enthusiasm, great sense of humor, and love of this genre that has completely overtaken my life! jen
jen! How sweet of you to make those very kind comments. We are lost together in the wonderful world of Bollywood. 🙂 Suzy, kaun hai? 😉
Congratulations again on your Unforgettable Tour tickets, and it not having to be a career breaking event for you. I had not heard of Big B’s potential voice over for the March of the Penguins, but now the word is out so I hope someone checks in and I’ll keep my ears open too. That would be hilarious and beautiful at the same time. I have seen almost all of “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” online, but the site wouldn’t load the last part of the movie, so I’ll check that link you provided, thanks! I love how Sashi says, “I can’t stand any form of ugliness!” when he freaks out in the funhouse seeing his distorted image in the wacky mirror. You reminded me to finish that film. Zeenat was practically naked throughout that movie, LOL, poor thing couldn’t afford clothes. I look forward to seeing your movie list. I think there’s a blog out there with your name on it jen.
All the best!
Richard, that “Sita Sings the Blues” animation is great!
Namaste Vipul Kapadia and I’ll check out your site. Thanks!
Meri priy saheli Sitaji, et al, check this out:
http://entertainment.oneindia.in/bollywood/news/bigb-voiceover-090407.html
Where to find Amitji’s version of this I’m not sure but I WILL be in India at the end of the year w/Global Exchange’s (www.globalexchange.org) Gandhian Legacy “Reality Tour”, so you can bet I’ll look for it then! More about that tour later!
And as far as “Nishabd” goes: I swear I’m not biased (really, truly I’m not!), but I thought that Amitabh’s performance in that film was stellar. I greatly appreciate the fact that he chose to do a part that was really complex and extremely unconventional, and, IMHO, brought out the extreme vulnerability, conflict, and heartbreak that someone in that character’s position would no doubt be experiencing. The actress who played the young woman was fine but I couldn’t stand her character, just so immature and bratty and self-centered and obnoxious. And aside from feeling a bit of motion sickness from the swoopiness of RGV’s camera angles, I was moved by the film. And I LOVED Amitabh’s rendition of “Rozana” (is there ANYTHING he could do that I wouldn’t like?!) (well, I thought that “Kyo? Ho Gaya Na” was pretty stupid!)
jen,
Thanks for the March of the Penguins information, so funny. I’ll have to catch Nishabd too.
Your upcoming trip sounds very exciting! I hope to make it there one day too. I’ve been checking out intrepidtravel now and again,
http://www.intrepidtravel.com/
but havent’ gotten my act together to actually polan anything. I look forward to hearding all about your trip. 🙂
Hi, Love your site and so happy to know there are other addicts here in Minneapolis! Do you ever organise meet ups? My daughter likes going to the movies with me ONCE but I can’t get her to go more than once as there are usually movies I want to see multiple times if I can before they leave the big screen.
jjake61!
Sorry friend to respond so late to this! I just saw it, DUH! glad to know you share my addiction on a local level.
I was thinking of doing a meet up and have a profile on meetup (using Madhubala’s Mugal-e-Azam photo, check for suzy {given gori naam} and bollywood and minneapolis you should find me) and will be sure to let you know it I start a group. Until then, see you up at brookdale, hai na? 🙂
Hi everyone! I SO wish that I could say “yeah, meet you at Brookdale” but what I CAN do is send out a big shout out to all of my Seattle/Bellevue local Indian Popular Cinema parivar and say “meet me at Totem Lake”; wish that you all in the Twin Cities could join us! I had thought of going to see “God Tussi Great Ho” tonight but my clarinet and Hindi practice in addition to the completely addictive Olympics (CBC rules!) preluded me from such extravagance (apologies to Manhohan Desai)!
Sita ji (Suji) Have you really scene all of those movies?
i wonder how good is your Hindi
It’s a wonderful blog 🙂
vivek
Sat Sri Akaal jen,
I know you can’t say, “See you at Brookdale!” But you can say, “See you in Delhi!” 🙂 I’ll have to check out Totem Lake if I ever make it to Seattle.
amaste vivekmittal,
Ji ha, I’ve seen all those movies. I had to track my obsession somewhere so why not online? 🙂
Mee tori tori Hindi samajhti hu. 😉
I also keep a little list of word or phrases I think I’ve learned from the movies, which would be rather embarassing for me to show a native Hindi speaker, hai na?
Thanks for your visit, and I like your blog too vivek!
Sitaj ji! You have an exhausting list of movies you have seen. I believe only one out of ten Indians must have seen that many movies. These movies have kinda essence to them. Try to see “Satyajeet Ray” movies(In Bangla). Maestro of movie making. “Pather Panchali” “Pratidwandi” to name a few. Here is the link to the website:
http://www.satyajitray.org/films/filmo_directed.htm
Itsmeeeeee-ji,
I have seen Pather Panchali and enjoyed it a lot, very lovely and sad. I also saw The Chess Players. I am looking forward to seeing all of Ray’s films, in particular Mahanagar. Thanks for your visit and the great link.
Hey Sita-ji!
I’m a fellow “Bollyholic!” I stumbled across your blog after searching google for a “Bollywood Club in Minneapolis.” Haha. I’m relatively new to the entire Bollywood scene – about a year or so since my obsession started, but I’ve seen around 150-200 films so far. Somewhere in there…LOL hard to remember them all! Do you know of any groups or clubs that meet in the area to enjoy Bollywood cinema? I’m very excited to try out the Brookdale 8 theater (the strike started right about when I moved back to the area and they haven’t had any films playing 😦 ) I hope to see Kambakkht Ishq there once it starts playing on the 3rd. Anyway, I look forward to reading your blog more and once I get my internet hooked up I’ll be back to blogging regularly about my adventures in Bollywood.
Kamala-chan (mere naam Jenna hai…lol)
Hey behen! Jenna-ji,
I support you addiction. I’ll send you and email and we’ll meet for a movie soon. Thanks for stopping in and commenting. Jai Hind! 🙂
I was very interested in the 2 movies you list from 1949 – Barsaat and Andaz. What did you think of them? I love old movies, one of my favourites is Raj Kapoor’s directorial debut from 1948, Aag, but they are hard to get up here in Aotearoa, so before I spend a lot of money I lke to know that they are likely to be worth it.
A small note about one other listing. You have a film listed as “Ankele Hum Ankele Tum” that might possibly have a couple of superogatory “n”s. 🙂
stuartnz-ji,
LOL, Thanks for pointing out those extra “n”s. Removed now thanks to you. 🙂 Thanks for reminding me about Aag, I have yet to see that. I sort of hop all over the board as far as eras. With Barsaat and Andaz, you really can’t go wrong. I enjoyed them both a lot. I think if I had to choose one, I’d recommend Andaz for Dilip Kumar’s performance. Toward the end of the film he completely freaks out, and I see that this is the style that Shahrukh Khan uses when he plays mentally unstable characters, e.g. Baazigar, and Darr. I’d seen Dilip playing the more understated cool guy (Devdas) and the friendly guy (Naya Daur) but to see hip snap in this role was a treat. Check back in with your thoughts after you seen them. I’d like to hear your impressions. Also, I’ve been meaning ot do an alphabetical list of the movies I’ve seen too, since that would be a lot easier to read. I appreciate you going through it in its messy current state. 🙂
p.s. Aotearoa…Wow! I had to look that one up. Look what I found:
Also have you seen Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai? Parts of it are filmed in New Zealand.
Re KHNPH. I honestly can’t recall. I think I may have tracked it down once I found that bits of it were filmed here, but if so, it has merged with too many other unremarkable films of the period. I do remember watching some the songs on youtube for the South Island scenery. It IS exciting when we get the very rare “hey that’s here” thing, given how few Hindi movies come up here. Now that desis make up the fastest-growing immigrant group, I’m hoping that might change. That and the critical acclaim for Firaaq, co-written by an Auckland-based desi, Shuchi Kothari.
LOL @ TS, JW & spinster, these are excellent observations.
It is said (with a little exaggeration) that more Scotch whiskey is sold in India than is produced in Scotland. Half of it probably ends up in Bollywood, either explicitly on screen or is drunk at parties. One of the best JW scenes is in “Johnny Mera Naam”, where a couple of cops attempt to arrest a baddie on grounds of drinking during prohibition. Jeevan (the baddie) is obviously drinking JW, and the cops (IS Johar in an excellent performance) test the bottle and declare it to be “pure”.
Really perceptive blog.
Samir-ji,
Thanks for checking it out an understanding my obsession and focusing on the slaps, whiskey and occasional spinster references. I feel a tiny bit less pagal when someone understands. 🙂 I have been trying to get a hold of “Johnny Mere Naam” so thanks for the reminder. Thanks for your kind words yaar. 🙂
Sitaey, check out “gunda” ……. so bad it’s good kind of thing
http://greatbong.net/2007/06/20/gunda-the-legend/

kumar-ji,
Thanks for the recommendation and link yaar. I like most, “So bad it’s good” type of films. 🙂
sita ji do you have an index link to list of films reviewd on your blog being trying to find your older film reviews
bollywooddeewana-ji,
You know I should have a much more organized system, like a second page, or minimum do an asterisk next to movies I’ve talked about. On my “to do” list and will let you know when it’s done. So many bloggers have a nice chronological system, alphabetical system. My list of film is just really a log of what I’ve seen so I can keep track, but you remind me to clean it up. 🙂
