Video of the Day: “Tadap Tadap” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)

blow_hum_dil_de_chuke_sanam.jpgToday’s video is “Tadap Tadap” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), but even better than this song is what happens just before it. This is such a wonderfully dramatic scene, and it’s what happens right before intermission, and the movie only get BETTER after this scene! How can anyone refuse the lure of Bollywood after seeing today’s clip? Watch how Nandini’s mom questions her about how far she’s gone with Sameer and just where he’s touched her and how she replies hysterically, “He has touched my soul. His eyes follow me everywhere. Don’t separate us! I won’t be able to live without him!”

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) is an Indian Bollywood film. It was released in the English-speaking world as Straight from the Heart. It was filmed throughout the Gujarat-Rajasthan border region, in addition to Budapest, Hungary, which was used to represent Italy. It stars Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Ajay Devgan and is centred around a love triangle. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was well received by most critics. However Aishwarya Rai was lavishly praised in her role which many critics considered to be sensitively played by the actress. The film also became a hit at the Indian box office but moreover in the foreign box office which was mostly credited to Aishwarya Rai’s box office draw among NRIs. As such the film is considered to be a breakthrough role for her not only winning her critical acclaim but also cementing her box office stature. (wikipedia)

The BFC blog has posted the song “Nimbooda” from the same movie, and now here’s “Tadap Tadap,” with music by Ismail Darbar, playback singers Kay Kay, and Dominique.

Thanks to toorad for fantastic the youtube video!

Lyrics from BollyWhat?

Video of the Day: “Kannamoochchi” from Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000)

kandukondain_kandukondain.jpgHere’s some more Tamil, like yesterday’s video it’s from Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000). The movie stars Mammootty, Aishwarya Rai, Tabu, Ajith, & Abbas.  Here’s my co-blogwallah Nandini’s favorite song from the movie, “Kannamoochchi.” The song’s music is by A. R. Rahman, lyrics by Vairmuthu, and features the fabulous vocals of  Chitra & K.J. Yesudas, picturized on Aishwarya Rai‘s dancing.

Video of the Day: “Engae Enathu Kavithai” from Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000)

kandukondain007.jpg

Kandukondain Kandukondain (Tamil: கண்டுகொண்டேன் கண்டுகொண்டேன்) is a 2000 Tamil film directed by Rajiv Menon. The film was also dubbed into Telugu as Priyuraalu Pilichindi. The film is a contemporary Indian take on Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. Starring Mammootty as Bala, Aishwarya Rai as Meenakshi, Tabu as Sowmya, Ajith as Manohar, and Abbas as Srikanth.

Set in modern India, it’s a classical tale of a widowed mother and her three daughters: Saumya and Meenakshi who are grown-up and beautiful, and Kamla who is still at school. They live with the widow’s father in his grand country house. The father, who is ill, dies unable to communicate that he wants to change his will. Everything is left to his son, Sam, and Sam’s mean wife. The family of women, who have spent years looking after the father, are evicted by Sam and his wife and are forced to move to Madras. Before this, both elder daughters have developed a romantic interest: Saumya with Manohar, a budding filmmaker returned from America who wants to make his mark in Tamil cinema; and Meenakshi with Srikanth, a young businessman who is involved in some dodgy investments. Major Bala (who is disabled) and his uncle befriend the girls and their mother. Bala, who was a commando major in the Indian army, is shown in the first scene being blown up, resulting in the loss of his leg. He drinks too much as he feels sorry for himself….(wikipedia)

ihavefounditkandukondain1325_f.jpg

The USA release is titled “I Have Found It.”

Watch the distraught Aishwarya Rai, as Meenakshi, achieveing her dream as a singer, but it means NOTHING because the man she loves is marrying another. But things aren’t so bad, for Mammootty, as Bala, is about to step in and make things right.

“Engae Enathu Kavithai” sung by K.S. Chitra & Srinivas, music by A. R. Rahman. Chitra’s voice is one of my favorites! Just listen to its beauty:

And if you’re interested in my favorite new internet obsession, it’s watching contestants on “Idea Star Singer 2007,” the Malayalam version of the Idols show.  I particularly like Vani Jayaram. Check out her version of today’s video: “Engae Enathu Kavithai”

RIP Roscoe. Video of the Day: “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” (1998); “Shauk Hai”(2007)

roscoe.jpgWith a heavy heart I dedicate these videos to Roscoe, a great cat who is now in a better place, if there is a better place than sitting comfortably on a couch watching great movies. I was lucky to have the company of Roscoe while watching many Bollywood movies and will miss him a lot, as will his keeper, mere dost, Tim. Tim provided Roscoe with a lavish lifestyle, usually reserved only for human royality. The videos today are from movies I watched with Roscoe. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai  (1999) starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, and Salman Khan. Alka Yagnik singing “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” :

And if you want to cry some more, this ought to help. Here’s a lovely song from a sad scene from the movie Guru (2007), which Roscoe also saw. In this scene are Aishwarya Rai , Vidya Balan and Abhishek Bachchan and the song is “Shauk Hai” by plack singer Sowmya Raoh written by A. R. Rahman, so get a tissue before watching.

Rest in Peace Roscoe Alevizos.

Mayur Verma, the young Amitabh

The other day, in the “O Saathi Re” post, I wrote how I’d noticed that the boy playing Amitabh in Muqaddar ka Sikander also played him in Laawaris. Co-Blogwallah Nandini and I both love the part in Laawaris where Mayur’s character, Heera, works in a restaurant and easily takes orders from the diverse clientele, in Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, etc.. He’s just so into that job and serves all with ease, and then starts to dance to the tune on the radio, Mere Angene Mein, Tumhara Kya Kaam Hai,” not knowing it was his OWN MOTHER singing. (She died in child birth and he was given up for adoption) His boss tries to stop him from dancing, but Heera (young Amitabh) says something like, “I can’t! Something about this song just speaks to me,” and continues to jam. Too bad I don’t have that video here for you to see. If I ever find it on youtube, I’ll post it here. My internet research lead me to his website. Read all about Mayur Verma.

mayur1.jpg

Check some of this out found in the “testimonials” section of his site:

* Debut film was Muqaddar ka Sikander, directed by Prakash Mehra; played the role of the child Amitabh Bachchan. Won various awards for the portrayal of this character and became an overnight sensation. The film went on to be one of the biggest blockbusters in Indian cinema history, celebrating its Diamond Jubilee.

* Achieved greater popularity with Lawaris and Bemisaal, again playing the childhood parts of Amitabh Bachchan and became the highest paid child artist.

Perhaps the most intriguing link on his website is the Mayur as a Travel Host. Just think about that! Flying over and meeting him, and asking stuff like, “Tell me about how Big B. treated you during the first film? Tell me EVERYTHING he said. What kind of food does he like?Do you still talk to him?” And Mayur would continue to be polite, but eventually just walk away.

Video of the Day: Asha Bhosle’s “O Saathi Re” from Muqaddar Ka Sikander (1978)

It’s day 3 of “O Saathi Re”!

sikandar.jpgLook at the young Amitabh trying to attend the party of his high caste friend. Isn’t that the same boy who played kid-Amitabh in Lawaaris? It is! Look at him now!

Both songs come from the 1978 movie Muqaddar Ka Sikander, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Raakhee Gulzar, Rekha and Amjad Khan.

As luck would have it, I came across another blogger smitten with this great movie.

Check out “the post punk cinema club” review of Muqaddar Ka Sikander .

Video of the Day: “O Saathi Re” from Muqaddar Ka Sikander (1978)

sikandar2.jpg

sikandar10.jpgYesterday’s video from Omkara was the song “O Saathi Re” and here’s a different “O Saathi Re” song, this time Kishore Kumar is the playback singer, and Amitabh Bachchan is pretending to sing. Amitabh’s speech before the song is so touching, even though I don’t understand too much of it, he still makes the point. This clip is from the 1978 movie Muqaddar Ka Sikander, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Raakhee Gulzar, Rekha and Amjad Khan. We’ve already posted another great song from the movie on this blog, “Salaam-e-ishq Meri Jaan” , also written by Kalyanji Anandji, so check that out too.

Thanks to youtuber rajnishnagar for the video.

And here’s another set of the lyrics translated by theBollywoodFan.

Video of the Day: “O Saathi Re” from Omkara (2006)

Omkara (Hindi: ओमकारा, Urdu: امکارا) is a 2006 Hindi film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. It starred Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles, supported by Vivek Oberoi, Naseeruddin Shah and Konkona Sen Sharma with a ‘’special appearance’’ from Bipasha Basu. The director Vishal Bharadwaj himself composed the entire music for the film, including the background score, with song lyrics by Gulzar.  (wikepedia)

Saw this film for the second time tonight, and thought this song is as lovely as Saif Ali Khan  is bad ass in the movie.“O Saathi Re” with playback singers  Shreya Ghoshal & Vishal Bharadwaj, composed by Vishal Bharadwaj .
